Millennium Plot Memorial | ALONE: Willie Bermingham was at a funeral in Glasnevin, in 1984, when he saw a wooden box on a wheelbarrow. When he enquired he was told it was the body of somebody who had nobody to bury them, bound for a ‘paupers grave’. This meant burial in an unmarked piece of ‘poor ground’ between the other graves. Poor ground was also used to inter victims of famine and disease epidemics and these burials were done under cover of darkness.
According to an ALONE Bulletin from that year, “Willie swore from then on that nobody in Dublin would ever be buried in an unmarked grave again.” ALONE began looking after these kinds of burials, either people who died without friends or family, or unidentified, or homeless people.?
